Commonly used building materials in the construction of houses

In order to accomplish the construction of a building, whether residential or commercial, some items would be necessary and these items are termed as building materials. Selection of these materials will be dependent on several factors such as availability of resources, purpose intended, design of the construction, location, nature of building and its size and several other factors. Two types of building materials are used in general. One being natural ones and its counterpart is synthetic materials. Natural ones are products naturally without or with minimal intervention of human beings. On the other hand, synthetic ones are mostly prepared by humans. Let us discuss about commonly used materials in constructions.

Solid and durable material used in constructions and are also found  in the ancient constructions are rocks. They are known for their solid nature and their durability. In earlier days, most of the constructions were totally made of rocks, and we can see them even today. This establishes the durable nature of this kind of building materials. Hardness and weight of these rocks cause problem in their molding and portability. We can see mud and clay in the construction of many buildings and they are the most common ones used for the purpose. They are not fragile and at the same time not as durable as rocks. Buildings can be secured for many years when mud and clay are used in their construction. Buildings made with mud and clay will be cool even in hot conditions and hence form better option for warm places. Concrete is used commonly nowadays. It is well known for its molding nature and portable feature. It is made with mixture of cement, sand, water and gravel. Steel bars are used for making structures. Concrete is very much durable and provides convenience in using. Glass is used in making windows and doors. It allows light to penetrate through itself and enables people to make use of day light.

Wood is used for construction purposes since times immemorial.  Wood logs and also other plant parts have been used by  humans as building materials to construct homes. Durability of wood depends on the type of plants from which it is obtained. Wood provides flexibility option even while being as durable as rock. Nowadays, wood is mostly used for the purpose of making furniture, cabinets, wardrobe and others such items. Various other kinds of materials are also used along with wood and steel is the common one among them.
