Calangute beach is the famous and busiest beach of Goa. Reaching this beach is not a difficult task when you are in Panaji, since it takes not more than 45 minute drive from there. This beach is regarded as ‘queen of beaches’ because of its beautiful and scenic premises. The name ‘Calangute’ is supposed to be a derivative product of the local language word, ‘Kolli-gutti’ which translates as ‘Land of Fishermen’. Many stalls offering Himalayan curios as well as jewelry can be seen along the way from the town to this beach. High number of tourists will be hitting Calangute beach every year. Most of the foreign tourists coming to this beach are Europeans. Tourists can be seen with their families, children, playing in this beach, building sand castles, relaxing, and enjoying the locality. Enthusiasts having interest in water sports can find this beach as heaven. They can enjoy water sports such as wind surfing, parasailing, water skiing, and others. These water sports start at the afternoon when the wind blows in the right direction and continues to entertain the people till sunset. Many bars and restaurants can be found at the entrance of the beach as well as on the Baga road. Though vegetarian dishes find their place, restaurants here are flooded with sea foods. In order to serve high number of western tourists coming to this beach, restaurants here are offering many kinds of western dishes and breakfasts also.
Goa beaches are famous for nightlife but most of the bars, except for few, wind up by 10 in the night. However some stay open during particular seasons. Notable attractions around Calagute beach are Kerkar art gallery, which displays various sculptures and paintings, and Church of St. Alex, which is crowned with a marvelous dome.
