Murud Janjira has many special features which are making people to create interest towards it. It is the only fort situated on the western shore of the Indian subcontinent. This fort has witnessed many attacks during the course of time, but stood undefeated. There are varied opinions regarding the origin of the name Janjira. Village situated nearby to this fort is called Murud. The beach present near this place is called Murud beach.
Murud is not only famous for the fort and the beach but also for temples surrounding it. The nearest temple from this fort is situated on the hill which is termed as Hill of Dattatray. From the top of this hill, one can have excellent sight at the two islands situated near it. Murud beach is one of the picturesque and relatively calm beach. This beach is comparatively untouched and less spoiled and is located at the foot of hills. It is one of the few beaches in India having clear waters. Sidda Vinayaka Temple, Alkapuri, Carambhi Dharan are few of the attractive places surrounding this beach. Inside the Janjira fort, there is a sweet water lake. Presence of sweet water lake on the island surrounded by salt oceanic waters, is still a mystery now also. Janjira fort can withstand Arabian sea hitting with sea waves. It has not been affected with even the tides of height 40 feet. This fort was actually built by fishermen, with an intention to protect themselves from thieves.
Rajapuri is the village situated nearest to this fort. There are rail, road and air ways to reach this fort. Mumbai is the nearest airport to this place which is at 165kms. Nearest railway station is Panvel. There is no problem of accommodation because of presence of hotels and lodges.
