Cheese board can be easy to prepare if you have good planning and good source of quality cheeses. Theme or the setting has to be known beforehand. It may be a wine party, or French or Spanish style dinner or any other such. Preparation of this board will change accordingly. It also lets us know about the amount of cheese per person to be arranged. Three to five cheeses will be better to serve. Cheeses varying in texture, appearance and taste should be used on the board. It would be a good option to use a soft and mild type, a firm type and a semi firm type of cheese on the board.
The main purpose of arranging a cheese board is to taste and compare the collection of cheeses kept on it. Hence three to six number of cheeses can be used for this purpose. Each of them have to be kept on separate small plates and all these small plates are to be kept on a large serving area. This makes the selection easy for the guests and by this kind of arrangement, different kinds of cheeses can be separated for convenience. One can label each kind of cheese with its specific name and its country of origin. It would be good idea to accompany these cheeses with fruit spreads, jams, nuts, olives and others such. Consider serving two to two and half ounces of cheese per person. Buy cheeses according to this calculation and the number of guests invited. Have some extra cheese so that it doesn’t get short. If any used slices of cheeses are retained after the dinner, as a host you can enjoy them the next day. Important thing to be kept in mind while serving is that the serve plates or boards should be big enough to accommodate cheeses to be served. Utmost care has to be taken to prevent any mingling or touching of cheeses with each other on the serve plates while serving. Otherwise their flavors and aromas get mixed ruining the actual taste.
Retain the rind of the cheese on itself, while removing the wrappers around them, before serving cheese board. Cheeses have to be served only after they reach the room temperature. Each cheese has to be provided with its own knife. Sharper knife would be necessary to cut the firm pieces of cheese while butter knife can do the work for soft cheeses.
